Dennis to Offer Monumental Collection on June 5th 

Stewartsville, NJ – In a special Saturday session on June 5th Dennis Auction Service will offer a monumental selection of mostly period furniture which is primarily American, along with an elite group of Continental and English pieces.  Important paintings and bronzes, an outstanding collection of clocks, a staggering group of art glass, blue decorated stoneware crocks with local scripts and rare shapes, fine porcelains and china, oriental rugs and much more will also be sold as part of the 600 lot sale.  The depth of this sale is impressive; virtually every area of American art and collectible can be found in great quality and quantity. 

Chief among the fine 18th and 19th C period furniture is an important 18th C South Carolina tilt top table with an inlay marquetry center medallion, claw feet, and the original White, Charleston, SC cabinet maker’s label. Early cupboards include a mahogany Hepplewhite corner scroll top corner cupboard with string inlay and glazed double doors on bracket feet and an 18th C Bergen County step back 2 piece cherry cupboard with 12 glazed panes.  Some exceptional original paint decorated pieces include a Queen Anne chest of graduated drawers, an outstanding three-color grain paint cradle, a selection of finely painted Windsor chairs, and a charming blue painted, line decorated American pony cart.  Other notable pieces include a Boston bird cage table with parquetry inlay and spider legs, a period Queen Anne dish top candle stand with the original finish, and an 18th C American tiger maple tavern table.  A Herter marble top sideboard with a porcelain medallion plaque and an 18th C three part Hepplewhite mahogany banquet table will also be offered.  Normally oak pieces would not be offered in an auction of this stature, but Frank Dennis made an exception for a truly exceptional original finish Victorian round oak table with full lion’s heads on the knees and massive claw feet.  “This is a powerful piece that simply would not be ignored,” stated Dennis. 

Paintings and bronzes of importance include an oil on canvas pastoral scene, Strolling Through the Meadow by George Ennis Jr., depicting a woman with children in a meadow with many farm animals and other wildlife.  An unsigned o/c in an elaborate gilt wood frame showing a Middle Eastern man reclining in a palace setting with servants in waiting, an o/c of a Bucks County water mill scene, signed Albertos, and several exceptional watercolors of Native Americans are all part of approximately 50 lots of fine paintings. Among several bronze statues is an outstanding original P.J. Mene hunt scene of a huntsman with a large hunting horn and two hounds, approximately 21” X 22”. 

Clock collectors will find much to appreciate.  Featured among five tall case clocks is an important 18th C walnut John Wood, Philadelphia having a brass moon dial, flame finial, floral rosettes, and reeded columns on ogee bracket feet.  This magnificent clock is in excellent condition and completely original.  Another tall case clock of particular note is an early 18th C Somerset County, Pennsylvania paint decorated clock with stars, stripes, and eagles on the face as well as the official coat of arms depicting two horses.  An 18th C French tall case clock has a porcelain face with a standing chicken at the top.  An 8-day Bixler, PA tall case clock and a tube chime clock that won 1st prize in the Panorama exhibition of 1915 will also be offered.  Fifty lots of mantel clocks are represented by Seth Thomas, Ansonia, Evans & Sons, J.E. Caldwell, Waterbury, and many more.  Pieces of distinction include an unusual figural elephant holding a small pendulum clock in his trunk, a French repousse repeater country clock, a J.E. Caldwell, Philadelphia beehive mantel clock, a Seth Thomas figure 8 calendar clock, and an exceptional massive Evans & Son, Handsworth silent strike mantel clock in carriage clock form with an ebonized case, bronze mounts and finials.  From a group of 6 figural mantel clocks by Ansonia, Waterbury, and others is an important P. H. Mouley figural clock, 14" x 20 L" in white marble with reclining bronze figure and bronze mounts.   Several exceptional carriage clocks include crystal regulators; some are jeweled with Dore bronze.   

Approximately 100 lots of art glass are represented by Tiffany, Daum Nancy, Lalique, Loetz, Moser, Steuben, Mount Washington, and more with a large selection of carnival glass and satin glass.  Outstanding among this group is a Moser green to clear three-color marquetry vase with a golden yellow and green single central flower.  Several epergnes include two Victorian, one a large green opal three lily vases, the other a cranberry opal four lily vases, as well as a Moser cut green epergne with elaborate all over gold enamel, 15 1/2" H.  Many American color cut to clear pieces include hard to find orange and purple colors as well as traditional blue and green. Approximately 100 lots of Brilliant cut glass from Libby, Hawkes, J. Hoare and others include many good patterns. 

Americana collectibles are endless.  A large group of tramp art boxes are all outstanding in their individuality.  Sewing boxes are highlights among this group; one is intricately carved with multiple drawers and fitted sewing sections with a large nostalgic heart on the top of the case.  Many early paint decorated boxes, a full-sized turn-of-the-century galloper carousel horse, and a variety of quilts in various patterns dated from 1850 will also be offered.   

More than 50 lots of blue decorated stoneware include rare local script jugs, including one from Hightstown, NJ.   Fulper jugs, bird jugs and jugs in rare sizes will excite the most discriminating collector.  A large selection of redware offers a tobacco stain bean pot, a mantel spaniel, molds, crocks and much more.  Art pottery is represented by Fulper, Roseville, Weller, Rookwood, Zsolnay, Moorcroft, Gouda, Durham, Lambeth and Hull.  Outstanding among them is a Roseville Baneda vase and an earth tone Fulper footed bowl supported by three figural monkeys.   

Porcelain and china has much to offer, including Meissen, Majolica, Dresden, Sevres, early Staffordshire, Royal Vienna, R.S. Prussia, Bavarian, Royal Bonn, Nippon, and Limoges, as well as a handsome selection of Chinese porcelain and French bisque. Highlighting this group is a Royal Bonn "Old Dutch" Pot & Pedestal which is only one of several pot and pedestals among the collection from Weller, Roseville and others.  A Sevres fish set in brown earth tones is decorated with fish motif and complete with platter and 12 plates. A German game bird set is hand painted with game birds on a grass green ground and has a large platter and several plates.  A piece worthy of special note is a Rose Canton tea pot, 10 1/2"H.  A King's Rose tea pot will also be offered.  A good selection of  Flo Blue and American transferware has many with historical scenes. Tea sets of note include a Spatterware set with rose motif and an extensive Gaudy Welch tea set complete with waste bowl.  Highlighting a group of steins is a Mattlach #1175 depicting forest gnomes drinking under a mushroom, and a RS Prussia mill scene jewel mold tankard. 

Lamps of distinction include an unusual reverse painted Deco lamp, probably Pairpoint, 23 1/4" H.  A sepia orange colored Gone with the Wind lamp is lavishly decorated with monks.  A Royal Art ruby and amber glass bronze lamp, a frosted glass Puffy lamp, Rembrandt, and a millefiori lamp with a matching shade and base in valentine red are all part of a large selection of lamps in every classification, including many slag glass lamps in a variety of colors from notable makers.     

Doll collectors will appreciate a group of approximately 20 dolls from France, Germany and England made from composition, bisque, and porcelain.  Makers are represented by   Bylo, SFBJ and Staffordshire.  A large group of snow babies will also be offered.

 Approximately 50 rugs include a 10 X 14 Laver Kerman, an exceptional 6x5 blue Peking, 2 indo Kashans, and 4 Caucasian runners.
